What does a flow monitor for gas offer?
A flow switch, often referred to as a flow switch or gas flow switch, accurately and precisely monitors the flow rate or flow of gas or air in a piping system. If the gas flow falls below or exceeds a preset value, the flow monitor sends out a signal which triggers an alarm message. If this is the case, you have sufficient time to close the affected valve or initiate further protective measures.
How does an airflow monitor work?
In air flow monitoring or gas monitoring, the flow monitor constantly checks the flow rate of the medium. The exact mode of operation depends on the type of sensor used. Modern sensors are based on physical principles in order to detect changes in the flow rate quickly and precisely. Probably the most frequently used method for a flow monitor is the thermal principle. This method uses two thermocouples or temperature sensors. While one sensor is heated to a target value, the other concentrates on the ambient temperature of the gas. The flow monitor measures the temperature difference between the two sensors in proportion to the gas flow velocity. If the flow falls below or exceeds the threshold value you have set, the flow monitor detects this and triggers a corresponding action, be it an alarm or the automatic closing of a valve.
Another principle that can be used in a flow monitor is a mechanical sensor, often in the form of an impeller, which is located in the gas flow. When gas or air flows through the pipe, it turns the impeller. A sensor monitors the rotational speed of the impeller. The speed is a direct measure of the gas flow. If the flow falls below or exceeds a certain value, the air flow monitor also triggers a signal in this case.
There are also other types of sensors, such as those based on acoustic or magnetic-inductive principles. Regardless of the specific principle, however, the basic function of the flow monitor is always the same: it continuously monitors the flow of matter and intervenes if it does not meet the specified requirements. This ensures that the gas or air flow in a system always remains within safe and efficient limits.
What are the advantages of airflow monitoring?
The use of a flow monitor has different advantages for different areas of application and requirements. If you need reliable gas and air flows, it is advisable to consider purchasing air flow monitors. In many systems, especially when hazardous or flammable gases are involved, an unexpected decrease or increase in airflow can lead to dangerous situations. The air flow monitor detects such deviations at an early stage and you can react immediately. If the air flow in industrial processes or laboratories is decisive for the quality of the end product or if it is a matter of protecting sensitive devices from overheating, an air or gas flow monitor also demonstrates its remarkable performance in this case.
Another advantage of air flow monitoring is that the air or gases circulate efficiently and at the correct setting. In this case, the flow monitor acts as an energy efficiency carrier and helps you to save energy costs. Furthermore, the usually significantly higher costs for manual measurement are eliminated, which also reduces the commitment of staff capacity.
With a flow monitor, the threshold values can usually be set individually, which guarantees you maximum flexibility. This allows you to meet different application conditions and requirements.
A flow monitor also does a reliable job when it comes to maintenance. If, for example, blocked filters are the cause of a sudden drop in air flow or a fan is threatening to fail, the problems can be identified more quickly and you can plan and carry out preventive maintenance work accordingly.
Overall, a flow monitor increases the reliability, safety and efficiency of your systems in which the control and monitoring of the air flow is of central importance.
Where are flow monitors used?
It will come as no surprise to you that a flow monitor with its many advantages is used in a wide range of applications. In industry in particular, the devices are considered indispensable when it comes to measuring the flow of gases and air flows.
The areas of application include
- ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to ensure the desired room temperature and air quality.
- Clean rooms to prevent contamination.
- Laboratories for the proper functioning of fume cupboard systems.
- Industrial process control for product quality and safety.
- boilers and heating systems so that sufficient combustion air is available and exhaust gases are properly discharged.
- server rooms and data centers to prevent the hardware from overheating.
- Mining and tunnel construction, for monitoring the supply of fresh air and the extraction of exhaust gases.
Certainly just a few examples in which a flow monitor or airflow monitor plays a decisive role.
Our selection of air flow monitors
In our product categories you will discover a large selection of flow monitors and air flow monitors that meet your specific requirements.
One of our most popular models is the NLSW45-3 air flow monitor evaluation unit as a universal air flow monitor with switching output for switch cabinet installation. The model has been tested by TÜV NORD in accordance with DIN EN 61010-1: 2011-07. The measuring range of the flow monitor is 0.1 ... 30 m/s. Commissioning is quick and easy. An alternative is the compact flow monitor including sensor RLSW4R with relay output (NO) and a measuring range of gases with stepless adjustment between 0.1 ... 15 m/s. The robust sensor design, IP67 protection class and compact dimensions of this flow monitor are particularly noteworthy.
We also offer variants such as the flow monitor with remote sensor RLSW4A M8 including analog output for measuring ranges of gases between 0.1 ... 30 m/s and the RLSW6AR flow monitor with two relay outputs for HVAC applications. This includes sensors and an automatic reset.
