Pressure sensors for industrial and production processes

Modern pressure sensors have proven their worth in measuring pressure in gases or liquids precisely and accurately. As a component in pressure transmitters or in other instruments, the pressure-sensitive elements of pressure sensors record the pressure and convert it into an output signal. Thanks to their wide range of applications, pressure sensors can be used successfully in many areas, such as pressure monitoring in industrial and production processes, medical technology or automotive engineering, to name but a few.

SEIKOM: Your specialists for pressure sensors in the industry

From the very beginning, we at SEIKOM Electronic have specialized in a range of innovative measurement and control technology which today includes pressure transmitters, heating, ventilation and air conditioningtemperature sensors, various flow monitors and much more. We are particularly proud of the fact that we are one of the few companies to offer you a large selection of Safety Integrity Level and ATEX products including, for example, the SIL2 flow monitor.

Around 30 years of expertise, a high demand for sound quality assurance and continuous further development are behind our range and our services. It goes without saying that we meet the requirements for TÜV Nord certification and work in accordance with the REACH, RoHS3 and WEEE directives. In addition, we do not source minerals from conflict areas for our production and are equally strict with our suppliers.

To ensure that our customers always feel that they are in good hands with us, we attach great importance to competent and reliable customer service. We take a lot of time to answer questions and provide advice and are the first point of contact for pressure sensors and the like far beyond the purchase. Our efforts also include ensuring fast deliveries and shipping orders received by 4 p.m. on the same working day.

Why rely on pressure sensors?

Pressure sensors are always the first choice when the pressure of liquids or gases flowing through systems or machines needs to be measured particularly accurately and monitored continuously. Once the pressure difference has been recorded, the information obtained is converted into a usable signal by the pressure sensor system. Especially in industrial process control or medical technology, pressure sensors are virtually irreplaceable.

The principle behind pressure sensor technology is as simple as it is ingenious. To detect the pressure, the most important element of the pressure sensor system is a pressure-sensitive membrane. This absorbs the pressure force, expands and forwards the information obtained. Using different measuring principles of pressure sensor technology, this is ultimately converted into a proportionally measurable variable. Ultimately, a physical quantity of pressure is transformed into an electrical output signal.

The advantages of this pressure sensor function are considerable:

  • Extremely precise measurements of the pressure of liquids and gases
  • Basis for efficiency, productivity and possible adjustments
  • Ensuring safety by detecting risks such as leaks or overpressure in good time
  • Avoidance of costly breakdowns and repairs
  • Extending the service life of systems and machines
  • More flexibility, as the pressure sensors are designed for various applications and conditions
  • Reliable data for process optimization and development

How is a pressure sensor system constructed?

The pressure sensor system consists of a measuring cell or pressure-sensitive membrane, which is the heart of the system. These detect the pressure transmitted by the pressure connections, which is exerted on them by briefly changing their physical structure. They deform or shift. This physical change can be measured. The measured pressure is then converted into an electrical, analog or digital output signal using a conversion mechanism such as piezoelectric or capacitive technology. Other components include the output interfaces, the housing that protects the electronics and the connections.

The pressure sensor is usually installed in a pressure transmitter. A pressure switch can also process and display the measured values from a pressure sensor. Depending on the type of measurement, both absolute and differential pressures can be recorded accurately and precisely via the pressure transmitter, which is also known as a pressure transducer. While a pressure switch is known for its fast response time and scores with an excellent price-performance ratio, pressure transmitters are particularly impressive in harsh environmental conditions. They are particularly robust and resistant to water and dirt. For this reason, they are particularly suitable as pressure sensors for industrial applications.

What types of pressure sensors are there?

In pressure sensor technology, which we also provide, a distinction is made between capacitive sensors and piezoelectric sensors. In the former, the capacitance between two conductive plates is measured with a non-conductive material. If the distance between the elements changes, the capacitance also changes. The closer the electrodes are, the higher the capacitance. The advantage of capacitive pressure sensors is that they work with non-contact measurement and do not require any moving parts, which increases their service life. In addition, very precise and even high pressure values can be recorded exactly. Although they are very insensitive to environmental influences, they can react more sensitively to changes such as temperature. Their range is also usually limited.

A piezoelectric pressure sensor works with a crystal made of quartz, for example, and makes use of the piezoelectric effect. When pressure is applied to the crystal, the piezoelectric material generates an electrical voltage that can then be measured. However, as the voltage drops over time if the pressure remains constant, piezoelectric pressure sensors are hardly suitable for static measurements, but are particularly suitable for dynamic pressure changes. Here, the method scores with very precise accuracy, even in high pressure ranges. The fast response time of the pressure sensors is equally impressive. It is also important to use amplification, as otherwise only small voltages can be measured.

While piezoresistive pressure sensors are ideal for industrial applications, medical technology or automation technology, capacitive sensors demonstrate their qualities in applications such as liquid level measurement, vehicle production and industrial process control.

The differential pressure sensor occupies a special position in pressure sensor technology. This measures the differential pressure by directly comparing two different pressures. For this purpose, two pressure chambers are used between a diaphragm. When pressure is applied, the diaphragm deforms between the two chambers. The change or difference that now arises between the elements is then converted into an electrical output signal.
