What are the benefits of ATEX lights?

The term "explosion-proof" for explosion-proof luminaires is derived from the abbreviation of the Latin word "explosio" for explosion. It thus describes ATEX luminaires that are designed to minimize the risk of explosion under hazardous atmospheric conditions.

Lighting with ATEX certification is designed in such a way that it cannot trigger an explosion, even if it is used in environments with flammable gases, vapors or dusts.

To this end, explosion-proof lighting meets strict safety standards and has been certified according to special standards such as the ATEX directive in the European Union. These standards ensure that all electrical and mechanical components of the explosion-protected luminaires are protected in such a way that they do not generate sparks or expose hot surfaces that could cause ignition of the surrounding explosive mixture.

How do explosion-proof lights work?

The basic mechanism behind explosion-proof luminaires is based on safely sealing the electrical components, including the wiring and switches, or designing them in such a way that no sparks or excessive heat can escape in the event of an electrical fault. The housings of ATEX luminaires are robust and often made of flame-retardant materials such as special alloys or reinforced plastic. They are also designed to withstand high pressure should an ignition occur inside the housing without this pressure being released to the outside and potentially causing a major explosion.

In addition, many explosion-proof luminaires are designed so that their surface temperatures remain below the ignition temperatures of the specific gases or vapors that may be present in their intended environment. This is achieved through the use of temperature control technologies that ensure that the luminaire does not become too hot, even during continuous operation.

The light sources themselves, often LEDs, which are known for their efficiency and low heat output, are also safely integrated into the design to minimize the risk of damage or overheating.

Where is explosion protection lighting used?

Our explosion-proof lights are ideal for a wide range of working environments with a risk of explosion. Thanks to their optimum protection, high impact resistance, excellent efficiency and durability, they perform reliably in the following areas.

Oil and gas industry

Flammable gases and liquids are omnipresent in refineries, drilling platforms and tank farms, posing a high risk of explosion. Ex-protected luminaires ensure safe lighting here.

Chemical processing plants

Chemical factories often process volatile substances that are highly flammable. ATEX luminaires are crucial to ensure that lighting here does not trigger any hazardous reactions.

Mining

Flammable dusts such as coal dust or explosive gases such as methane can occur underground. Explosion-proof luminaires are necessary to ensure safety in these potentially hazardous working environments.

Grain mills and processing plants

In food processing, especially in mills, grain dust can form explosive mixtures. Explosion-proof luminaires are required in this area to minimize the risk of dust explosions.

Paint and varnish factories

Solvent-containing vapors in paint and varnish factories can be highly flammable. The use of explosion-proof lighting helps to reduce the risk of fire and explosion.

Waste water treatment plants

Methane gas and other flammable gases can be produced in waste water systems. Explosion-proof luminaires are essential to safely illuminate the work areas.

Fuel depots and transshipment points

Places where fuels are stored or handled also require the use of explosion-proof luminaires due to the high risk of fire from petrol vapors or other flammable liquids.

Pharmaceutical industry

In the pharmaceutical industry, too, the handling of various chemical compounds can create explosive atmospheres that require special lighting solutions.

How do you find the right explosion-proof light?

Not every explosion-proof luminaire is suitable for every environment. Before deciding on a model, consider our tips below for finding an explosion-proof luminaire that suits you and your environment.

1. determination of the zone

Potentially explosive atmospheres are classified according to zones, which indicate the level and type of explosion hazard. Knowledge of the specific zone is crucial in order to select an ATEX luminaire that meets the requirements of these environments.

Brief digression: Potentially explosive atmospheres are classified into different zones based on the likelihood of explosive atmospheres occurring. Flammable gases are divided into zones 0, 1 and 2, while flammable dusts are assigned to zones 20, 21 and 22.

Zone 0 stands for permanently or frequently present vapors, mists and gases, zone 1 for occasionally occurring and zone 2 for rarely and briefly present. The situation is similar with dusts: Zone 20 covers permanent or frequent, Zone 21 occasional and Zone 22 rare and temporary dust occurrences.

2. understanding the classifications and certifications

Look out for explosion-protected luminaires that are certified in accordance with the relevant standards. In Europe, for example, these are ATEX and worldwide IECEx. The certifications ensure that the explosion-protected luminaires are suitable for use in certain explosive atmospheres.

3. selection of the correct protection class

Ex-protected luminaires are classified according to their ability to prevent the ingress of dust and water as well as their resistance to mechanical impact. Protection ratings such as IP66 or higher provide strong protection against dust and water, which is critical in many industrial environments.

4. consideration of the ambient conditions

Assess the environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity and chemical exposure, to ensure that the chosen explosion-proof luminaire can withstand these conditions. Extreme temperatures, both high and low, can place special demands on the light source and the housing.

5. light output and energy efficiency

The amount of light required, measured in lumens, and energy efficiency are also important considerations. LED luminaires are often the preferred choice as they are durable, energy efficient and able to deliver consistent light output in harsh environments.

What are the optimum installation conditions for explosion-protected luminaires?

It is clear that Ex-protected luminaires can only make the most of their advantages if they are installed in such a way that they meet all the requirements of the environment. You should therefore pay attention to the following requirements during installation.

1. site selection

Choose a mounting location that can provide maximum illumination and ensure that the Ex-protected luminaire is not exposed to extreme conditions that could affect its performance. The ATEX luminaire should be positioned so that it is easily accessible for maintenance, but at the same time so that it cannot be damaged by routine activities.

2. avoidance of obstacles

Ensure that the explosion-proof luminaire is mounted free of any obstacles that could otherwise block the light or restrict the spread of light. It should be mounted high enough to allow a wide and even light distribution, but not so high that maintenance is made difficult.

3. safe electrical connection

It is important that all electrical connections are installed in accordance with the safety standards for potentially explosive atmospheres. This includes the use of explosion-proof cables and connecting elements as well as the proper earthing and fusing of all electrical components.

4. heat dissipation

Although LED luminaires generate less heat than conventional luminaires, it is important to choose a mounting location that allows sufficient heat dissipation to prevent overheating. This is particularly essential in environments with high ambient temperatures.

5. corrosion protection

In environments exposed to corrosive chemicals or extreme weather conditions, Ex-protected luminaires should be fitted with additional corrosion protection. The use of stainless materials or corrosion-resistant coatings can significantly increase the service life and reliability of the ATEX luminaire.
