Why use a hygrostat?
In contrast to temperature perception, we humans do not have a pronounced sensitivity to changes in humidity. Although we notice differences in temperature relatively quickly, we do not immediately recognize when the humidity rises or falls. However, such an imbalance in humidity can affect our health. It is therefore important to maintain an optimum humidity level of 40 % to 60 %. This is where a hygrostat comes into play. The smart device measures and regulates the humidity in a room or environment. Once it has recorded the humidity, it automatically activates or deactivates a humidifier and dehumidifier with the aim of achieving the previously set humidity level.
The use of a hygrostat has numerous advantages:
- Regulating humidity and improving indoor air quality
- Increased energy efficiency through optimized operation of humidifiers and dehumidifiers
- Protection against mold growth due to excessive moisture
- Protection of materials that are sensitive to moisture, such as wood, works of art and electronic devices
- Supports health aspects by avoiding air that is too dry or humid, which can cause respiratory problems
What is the difference between a hygrostat and a hygrometer?
Although hygrostat and hygrometer are often mentioned in the same breath, they differ from each other in their range of functions. The hygrometer only measures the relative humidity of the room air. The hygrostat can also regulate this by automatically operating a connected humidifier or dehumidifier and adjusting the air quality to the specified target value.
How do hygrostats work?
A hygrostat regulates the humidity in a similar way to how a thermostat controls the room temperature. The thermostat switches the heating off when the temperature rises above a setpoint and switches it on again when it falls below it. Similarly, the humidistat switches off the humidifier when the humidity exceeds the set target value and activates the dehumidifier when it falls below it.
Hygrostats work by monitoring and controlling the relative humidity in an environment. They are equipped with a humidity sensor that measures the current humidity very precisely. If the measured humidity deviates from a previously set target value, the device sends a signal to the connected appliance to correct the humidity. The control is automatic and ensures continuous adjustment of the humidity, depending on changes in the environment or the specific requirements of the room.
Where are hygrostats used?
A hygrostat can be used effectively in many different areas. These include offices and living rooms, technical rooms, cold storage rooms, food storage and in the horticultural, textile, paper, printing and film industries. It is also used in hospitals, where precise humidity control is required.
Residential building
In private homes, hygrostats ensure that the humidity remains within a healthy range. They help to prevent the formation of mold, which can be caused by excessive humidity, and at the same time ensure that the air does not become too dry, which irritates the skin and respiratory tract.
Offices and business premises
In offices and business premises, the devices help to create a pleasant working environment. By controlling the humidity, the air quality is improved, which increases the concentration and productivity of employees. They also protect office equipment, especially electronic devices and furniture, from damage caused by excessive humidity.
Industrial plants
In production facilities, humidity control is crucial to ensure the quality and shelf life of products. Hygrostats regulate humidity to create ideal conditions for various production processes, e.g. in the textile, pharmaceutical or food industries.
Agriculture and greenhouses
In agriculture, especially in greenhouses, hygrostats play an important role in creating optimal growing conditions for plants. They control the humidification systems to keep the moisture in the soil and air at an ideal level for plants.
Art galleries and museums
In cultural institutions such as art galleries and museums, hygrostats protect valuable exhibits from damage caused by humidity levels that are too high or too low. They help to stabilize the climatic conditions to ensure the preservation of paintings, sculptures and historical artefacts.
Laboratories and clean rooms
Hygrostats are essential in laboratories and clean rooms to ensure accurate and reproducible results. They keep the humidity at a constant level, which guarantees the integrity of scientific experiments and the sterility of working environments.
How to choose the right electronic hygrostat?
So that a hygrostat can reliably detect and regulate humidity, there are a few things you should consider before buying. We will be happy to help you personally with your selection. The following criteria will give you an initial orientation.
Measuring range and accuracy
Check the measuring range and accuracy of the humidistat. The measuring range should cover the typical humidity conditions of your area of application. Accuracy is important to ensure that humidity is precisely regulated, especially in sensitive environments such as laboratories or museums.
Adaptability and adjustment options
A good electronic humidistat should have flexible setting options so that you can adjust the humidity setpoint according to your specific needs and the requirements of the environment.
Integration into existing systems
If you already have an air conditioning or automation system in use, the humidistat should be compatible to enable seamless integration.
User-friendliness and display functions
Choose a model with a user-friendly interface and clear display functions. A good display that clearly shows current humidity values and system status is essential for easy operation and monitoring.
Alarm functions and security features
Some hygrostats have an integrated alarm function that warns users when the humidity is outside the set range. Such functions are useful if you want to ensure rapid manual adjustment.
What applies to the installation conditions of a humidistat?
In addition to the selection criteria, a humidistat also places special demands on the installation. You should therefore consider the following points when purchasing a humidistat.
Selection of the location
Avoid locations where the humidistat is exposed to direct sunlight, strong air currents, heat sources such as radiators or air conditioners and sources of humidity, as these can falsify the measurements.
Mounting height
In most rooms, the humidistat should be mounted at a height of around 1.5 to 1.8 meters above the floor. This height usually represents the average ambient humidity that comes closest to the actual conditions to which people are exposed.
Free air circulation
Make sure that there is sufficient free space around the appliance to ensure adequate air circulation.
Protection against soiling and corrosion
In environments that are dusty or have chemical vapors, the installation should be carried out in such a way that no external influences impair the functions. The condition may require the use of additional housings or filters.
Easy access for maintenance and calibration
The humidistat should be installed in such a way that it is easily accessible for maintenance, calibration or replacement.
Alignment of the sensor
Also make sure that the sensor is correctly aligned, especially if the humidistat has specific installation requirements, such as a certain orientation to the air flow.
Take into account the specific environmental conditions under which the humidistat is operated. Some models are specially designed for harsh environments or special applications and offer additional protection against extreme conditions. At SEIKOM Electronic, you will find a range of high-quality humidistats that impress with their precision and durability.
