Flow measurement as a success factor

Flow measurement using a flowmeter is an important process in various industries and technical applications. The volume or quantity of liquids or gases flowing past a point within a certain period of time is determined quantitatively.

There are different types of flow measurements that are based on different physical principles. At SEIKOM Electronic, we use the following principles for our measurement and control technology primarily on calorimetric or thermal flow measurement. In some cases, heated sensors measure the ambient temperature. Heat is dissipated from the sensors by passing media such as gases or liquids. Based on this temperature drop, the quantity of the passing medium is reliably determined thanks to the flow meters. As not only the flow but also the medium temperature can change, a reference measurement is always carried out to ensure consistently high measurement quality.

Flowmeters - efficient flow monitoring

Special devices are required for precise flow measurement. SEIKOM Electronic offers you a range of high-quality flow meters, from simple flow monitors and flow meters to precise volumetric flow meters. All flow meters are designed for accurate and reliable flow measurement in demanding industrial environments.

Flow measurement - which flow meter is the right one?

The correct choice of your flowmeter is of crucial importance, as it significantly influences the accuracy and reliability of the recorded data. In addition to the ambient conditions in which the measurement is carried out, the specific requirements of the process or application must also be taken into account. This includes aspects such as the measuring range, temperature and pressure of the medium to be measured. In addition, the type of medium plays an important role: different liquids or gases have different physical properties that affect the choice of flowmeter. The integration of the measuring device into the existing control or monitoring system is another point to consider. The communication interfaces and protocols must be compatible to ensure seamless integration.

Frequently asked questions

WHICH MEDIUM (E.G. GASES, LIQUIDS) SHOULD BE MEASURED DURING THE FLOW MEASUREMENT?

Depending on the medium being measured, different sensors and materials are used - the underlying thermal measuring principle is the same. When measuring air/gases, the sensor elements are usually located directly in the air flow and can reliably monitor the smallest changes in flow. We use a closed sensor system for monitoring liquid media.

WHICH MEDIA TEMPERATURE SHOULD BE MEASURED?

All measuring devices can be used for flow measurement in industrial environments up to approx. 80°C without any problems. We also offer sensors for hot environments up to 400°C. We use special sensor elements for these media temperatures. These have proven themselves in particular in the field of industrial furnaces, heating equipment, heating registers, soldering systems as well as testing and inspection equipment, in mechanical and plant engineering, process technology, exhaust gas and emission monitoring.

WHICH SIGNAL OUTPUT IS REQUIRED?

SEIKOM Electronic offers flowmeters with various signal outputs, including relay outputs and relative as well as linear analog outputs (0-10 V, 4-20 mA).

Relay outputs enable the monitoring of minimum or maximum currents by triggering a switching contact when specified values are exceeded or not reached. They are ideal for air flow monitoring in air ducts and machines. Examples of devices are RLSW4 to RLSW8 and NLSW45-3.

Relative analogue outputs provide linearized output signals for visualizing the flow level and are often used in programmable logic controllers (PLC, PLC, DDC), such as models RLSW4A and RLSW5A.

Linear analog outputs provide the most accurate flow measurement and processing for controllers and fan controls, such as the RLSW8.

These flow meters are designed for various applications in flow monitoring and control, providing reliable and accurate measurements for different requirements.

WHAT TYPE OF SENSOR IS REQUIRED?

Devices for flow measurement are available both in a compact design (RLSW®) and as an evaluation unit for installation in a control cabinet (NLSW®) with a separate sensor.

In the compact design (RLSW®), the sensor and evaluation electronics form a single unit and the flow measurement and signal evaluation take place directly at the measuring point. The measuring devices are designed for robust industrial use and generally have an IP65 degree of protection (RLSW®8: IP54). The advantages of this design are, on the one hand, the ability to read information directly at the installation location (LED or LCD display). Secondly, signals are evaluated immediately and then transmitted over longer distances by cable.

The design with evaluation unit (NLSW®) and separate wired sensor is suitable for control cabinet installation. This design is particularly suitable for harsh process applications and if the signals are to be processed directly in the control cabinet. It is also essential for flow measurement in explosion-protected environments (ATEX zones 1 and 2).

If you have opted for a separate evaluation unit, please note that the corresponding sensor (available in different lengths/immersion depths) is available separately.

All sensors have a standard cable length of 2.5 meters. We are happy to manufacture sensors with longer cable connections (up to 30 m in environments up to 80°C) - simply contact our team.

ARE THERE DEVICES SPECIFICALLY FOR THE REQUIREMENTS OF EXPLOSION-PROOF AREAS OR SAFETY REQUIREMENTS SUCH AS SIL?

For explosion-protected areas, we use specially certified sensors and evaluation units for ATEX zones 1 and 2 for flow measurement. Flow monitors with relay output (NLSW®45-3 Ex) as well as with relative analog output (NLSW®75-A Ex) are available for this purpose. The scope of delivery includes the evaluation unit and two Zener barriers for installation outside the explosion-protected area.

For environments with SIL1 requirements, we also offer certified devices for flow measurement (NLSW®45-3 SIL1 and sensor F3.x SIL1).

For applications with ATEX and SIL1 requirements, our range includes the NLSW®45-3 Ex SIL1 device, which meets both requirements. Here too, the evaluation unit and the associated Zener barriers are included in the scope of delivery.

Please note that both the evaluation unit and the sensor must be certified accordingly in order to meet the requirements for explosion-protected areas as well as the SIL1 requirements. We will be happy to provide you with all certificates on request at any time.

WHAT SENSOR LENGTH DO I NEED?

A laminar and therefore steady flow without turbulence is required for reliable flow measurement. Experience has shown that this flow occurs in the middle of the air duct or pipe. The sensor should therefore extend into the middle of the duct or pipe.

Air flow sensors are available in standard lengths of 50 mm (Fx), 130 mm (Fx.1), 165 mm (Fx.2), 300 mm (Fx.3), 400 mm (Fx.4) or 500 mm (Fx.5). Special lengths are also easily possible.

Sensors with an immersion depth of 46 or 150 mm are available as standard for measuring the flow of liquid media. We are also happy to provide special solutions here if required.

In addition to the sensor length, the inlet and outlet distances (upstream and downstream of the sensor - usually at least 5 times the pipe or duct diameter) must also be taken into account for optimum measurement results. Installation directly behind a fan or angled pipe or obstacle should be avoided due to turbulence.

WHICH PROCESS CONNECTION DO I NEED?

Various installation options are available for installation in the air duct or pipe. All SEIKOM Electronic sensors for flow measurement have a threaded connection and can therefore be screwed directly into the duct.

Air flow sensors are supplied with a PG7 thread as standard and can be screwed directly into the air duct or pipe.

Using separately available reducers, the sensor can be easily adapted to the process connections M16 x 1.5, M20 x 1.5 or G1/2 inch (or other connections).

Sensors for measuring liquid media (e.g. RLSW®7, F6.x) have a G1/2-inch or G1/4-inch connection as standard.

We also offer screw-in adapters with an M20 x 1.5 external thread. Here you can adjust the immersion depth of the sensor continuously and thus easily identify the optimum measuring point for flow measurement. The sensors can be easily removed for regular cleaning (e.g. in contaminated media, in exhaust gas environments, etc.).

We also offer various mounting flanges as accessories.

ARE THE DEVICES TÜV-CERTIFIED?

Yes, we offer our selected devices for flow measurement with TÜV type examination in accordance with DIN EN 61010-1:2011-07. The devices are certified and regular inspections and quality checks are carried out in our production workshops by our experienced team.
